The platforming is just OK and several levels are pretty annoying, but the whole tone and feel of the game, and the audacity of having a different art style and different designs in every level makes it feel like a series of vignettes, which is very true to my experience with summer camp. Psychonauts really captures the spirit of summer camp, discovery, and friendship. Psychonauts - I'm going to include this even though Majesco published it in the end because it was a Microsoft game until the very end and got dropped due to financial bullshit. You can never catch time in a bottle, though.ġ. I never really got into golf games after EA took over the market, but MS Golf remains a very fond memory. The graphics were amazing-google screenshots and you'll see how laughable this claim is today. The Links series, later Microsoft Golf, was the absolute best golf game. I enjoyed Golf a little bit, I guess, but mostly I played because I wanted to be like him, and I watched the PGA tour because I wanted to be like him. Microsoft Golf (especially 2.0 and 3.0) - Growing up, my Dad played a lot of Golf like every other white collar middle management Dad out there. I've love to see a modern take on Encarta.ĥ. Mindmaze was like directed learning in a way, giving me ideas of what to look up next. It's hard to convey to people now, but back then it was difficult to instantly fact-check anything online and encyclopedias were a really big part of learning about the world. Encarta Mindmaze - I had always been a fan of Carmen Sandiego, so discovering an encyclopedia-driven trivia maze minigame with a cool renaissance theme as a HIDDEN EASTER EGG in my CD encyclopedia was amazing. Pity Microsoft isn't signed to GOG and thus there's no way to buy or play this now.Ĥ. That's not a euphemism, I was a kid, I liked wrestling moves.

I bought my first computer mic to record audio for my 3d movie maker films, most of which were about people body slamming each other.

Microsoft 3d Movie Maker - still better than Source Filmmaker tools, still the best movie-making software ever. Thank heavens the developer got the rights back and was able to release CC on a modern platform.ģ.
Is it good puzzle design? No, not really, but I loved it. I especially loved the ice skating levels where you were basically on autopilot. Chip's Challenge - the quintessential level-based puzzler, massive amount of content (some impossibly hard due to the timing elements), great oldschool ugly-but-good graphics. Bringing AoE2 back through AoE2 HD is amazing, maybe the best remaster/rerelease ever, and it occurred during a very brief moment of sanity after Microsoft had abandoned the disastrous GFWL and before Microsoft started the disastrous UWP. When the expansion came out I switched to playing the Huns pretty exclusively so I could rush.
Age of Empires II - Easily the best multiplayer experiences I ever had, loved recording and watching replays, loved the campaigns (which were surprisingly educational), loved the variety of playstyles based on map, civilizations, and settings. Microsoft Game Studios is one of my favourite publishers of all time, their games have been a part of my life since I was very young.ġ.

Sadly I never got to try MM3, as it was never released on PC and I didn't have an Xbox (or knew anyone who had one). I played it a lot too, and this time I did most of the races. MM1 was my first open world game, and the entire city of Chicago (OK, it probably was smaller than the actual city) was my playground. The sequel was great too, but it didn't have the same impact as the first game.
There was even a cheat to play with a plane! (which couldn't fly, but it was still impressive to me). Dodging cars in the highway, entering the Meigs Field airport and the stadium, this game had it all. And less often, but not any less fun, I also downloaded some modded vehicles and tracks and messed around with them. Other times I chose to wreack havoc while listening to my favorite albums using the in-game CD player. Sometimes I felt like driving in first person, abiding by the law.

Of course, I loved the full version even more. My dad got me a steering wheel to go along with the demo that came with a gaming magazine at the time, and I loved it. It also had a bunch of racing modes, but I never played those. That game gave me countless hours of joy, cruising around Chicago while busting up police cars and driving through ghost pedestrians.
